I'm a poli sci major because I care about what's happening NOW. I want to analyze election data, campaign strategies, voting behavior. I want to read about current gerrymandering lawsuits and the impact of social media on political polarization. That stuff gets me excited. 📱🗳️

But my department requires a "history of political thought" class, and the research paper is due in 3 weeks. Topic: any aspect of Athenian democracy. I have to use primary sources like Plato and Aristotle. I have to care about things that happened 2,500 years ago. 😴

I'm struggling so hard to find motivation. Every time I try to read about the Athenian Assembly or ostracism, my brain just glazes over and I end up on Twitter seeing what's happening in Congress today. The contrast is just too stark. 📜 vs. 📱

My professor says "understanding the origins helps us understand the present." Fine. I get that intellectually. But my heart isn't in it. I need to find an angle that connects to something I actually care about. 🧠

So here's my plea to you ancient history nerds: Help me find a hook. Is there something about Athenian democracy that connects to modern political issues? Like, did they have problems with misinformation? Factionalism? Populism? Corruption? I need a thread I can pull that ties ancient Greece to 2026. 🧵

If I can trick my brain into thinking this is relevant to modern politics, maybe I can actually write this paper without dying of boredom. Any suggestions? 🙏
