I run a little lifestyle blog as a hobby, and I've been trying to make my writing more engaging and less like a robot wrote it. I was reading one of my favorite food blogs the other day, and I noticed the author used colons all the time in really creative ways.
For instance, she wrote, "The secret to the perfect cake is simple: patience." It was just so direct and punchy. That's when I asked myself, seriously for the first time, what is a colon in writing capable of? I always thought it was just for formal stuffy essays, but it's actually perfect for creating a conversational, emphatic tone online. Now I'm using it everywhere! "My top travel tip: pack light." "What I learned this week: be kind to yourself." It adds such a nice rhythm to my posts. I feel like it helps me connect with my readers better because it feels like I'm directly telling them something important.
It's funny how one tiny punctuation mark can completely change the vibe of your writing. Has anyone else discovered a new love for a grammar rule they used to hate? It's a whole new world!
